The Swedish Esbjörn Svensson Trio, playing in the same line-up for over a decade, is one of the most popular and well-known jazz formations today. The key to their enormous popularity is interchanging styles: preferring pop melodies or electronic music, the fusion of classical, rock and d’n’b or hip hop and funk motifs. Their music is at once characterised by romantic beauty and all-out improvisation, and they remain untouched by the typical musical aloofness of the style. Occasionally the audience breaks out in song prompted by a standard thrown in now and then. And they don’t mind it, on the contrary! Their fans include not only jazz, but pop and classical music lovers as well.
The once stadium-rock drummer now jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson met the drummer Magnus Öström in the early eighties, and they were joined in 1993 by the present double bass player Dan Berglund to join their ever since unchanged trio. The formation proved to be a hit. Their first album, ‘Everyone Has Gone’ (Dragon), was released the same year, followed by the concert album ‘Mr. & Mrs. Handkerchief’ (ACT Music+Vision) in 1995. They signed over to the pop label Superstudio Gul, and produced their ‘Winter in Venice’ (1997, Superstudio Gul) album, which won the Swedish Grammies.
In 1998 their album titled EST Plays Monk (Superstudio Gul) was a huge success selling more than ten thousand copies, resulting in an awards avalanche for the band. (They received awards in the best jazz musicians category in 1995 and 1996, and Esbjörn Svensson was awarded as best song writer in 1998 in Sweden). EST achieved international fame with their album ‘From Gagarin's Point of View’ (1999), which was incredibly popular at the JazzBaltica and Montreux Jazz Festival. Their popularity increased further with ‘Good Morning Susie Soho’, and the 2002 ‘Strange Place for Snow’ became the music to Marina de Van’s film, Dans ma Peau. This material won the Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, took the German Jazz Award, the Choc de l'année (Jazzman, France) and the special prize at MIDEM. Their next album, ‘Seven Days of Falling’ collected more awards, and Esbjörn Svensson became European Artist of the Year in December 2004. In 2003 they released the DVD ‘Live in Stockholm’ and the albums ‘Viaticum’ in 2005, ‘Tuesday Wonderland’ in 2006 and ‘Live in Hamburg’ in 2007.
