Share is an initiative that committed itself to the support of open and spontaneous collaboration between audio and visual artists, and provides the necessary infrastructure for the functioning of this community, in a broad sense of the word. ShARE is a melting pot that reinterprets the relationship between artist and audience, there is no stage, playing music and screening videos take place in an open space. The speakers broadcast in several directions and films are projected onto the walls.
The aim of the project is to create a communal artistic discourse, which gives an opportunity in a space fit with digital sound and image broadcasting technologies for the audience to connect to the network using their own instruments (from powerbooks to sitars) and image editing devices, and take part in the three to four hours long communal music and projecting session. The project enables the democratisation of art and exciting crossing of artistic ideas utilising modern technology. As opposed to more orthodox stage productions, the audience dissolves, seems to disappear, as anyone, who feels an urge to, and keeping within certain limits, can contribute.
Share exists since 2001 in New York, where a dozen digital and audio-visual artists have created not only the technical background of the project (instruments and software), but developed the standards and etiquette of such a shared creative process. Their sponsor is one of New York’s internet providers, hence the sessions are not only recorded but also streamed online. Since the formation of Share it takes place every weekend, showcasing local multi-media artists or invited foreign guests before giving the floor over to the ‘audience’ for several hours. Naturally, one doesn’t have to contribute and plenty of people attend as spectators.
Share was introduced in Hungary during spring UH Fest. The American founders travelled to Budapest (with the support of an American tender) to hold a workshop for attendants from Hungary and several neighbouring countries (with the support of the Visegrad Foundation) about the philosophy, organisation and minute technical details. The aim of the workshop was not only the building of a Hungarian Share network and its introduction in the form of a free Saturday event, but to encourage the participants to start similar events in heir countries. This was so successful that since then sessions were held in Beograd and Prague as well, and two nights in Merlin’s rehearsal room.
